Intermag 2024 in Rio – Skyrmionics team in Brazil!

The IEEE International Magnetics conference 2024 in Rio just finished! Our skyrmionics team member Will Griggs participated in the 2024 Intermag conference, which this year took place in stunning Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 5th – 10th of May. Situated mere metres from the white sands of Praia da Barra da Tijuca, the conference venue offered the unique advantage of being able to go from morning seminars to the shore and back again in time for the afternoon sessions. Here (the conference, not the beach!), we showcased our work on i) skyrmionic artificial synapses and ii) skyrmions in nanodot arrays, and enjoyed many fruitful discussions on both. Attendees were treated to a diverse variety of talks on spintronics, skyrmions, unconventional computing and beyond, including plenary session from Nobel laureate Albert Fert. It was particularly exciting to see proliferating interest and significant progress that has been made towards realizable neuromorphic computing based on magnetic devices.

After a joint Intermag-MMM conference in New Orleans next year, The University of Manchester will take the reigns for Intermag in 2026, joining a long list of spectacular venues which have hosted this calendar highlight. Between now and then, the spintronics and neuromorphic computing communities are poised to make tremendous progress.
